Introduction
Rationale and Aim of Policy
The School wishes to recognise the outstanding and exceptional achievement of its students in a variety of School activities – Academic, Cultural and Sporting- through enabling students to be awarded Colour and/or Honour Awards for these achievements. The School also wishes to recognise those students who provide outstanding service to the School by the granting of Service Awards.
This policy aims to set out the criteria and process by which students are able to receive Colour and/or Honour Awards and /or Service Awards.
Eligibility for Awards
Colour and/or Honour and/or Service Awards may be awarded to Kindergarten to Year Nine and Senior School students.
Timing of Awards
Colour and/or Honour and/or Service Awards are to be awarded at the end of every Semester in accordance with the nomination and decision making procedures outlined in this policy.
Colours and Honours
Categories
Students may be awarded Colour and/or Honour Awards for the following endeavors:
– Academic Achievement;
– Cultural Achievement in Dance, Drama, Music, Visual Art and in other cultural activities recognised as worthy of recognition by the Senior Leadership Team from time to time;
and/or
– Sporting Achievement in MDSA and other School sporting activities recognised as worthy of recognition by the School’s Senior Leadership Team from time to time.
Guiding Principles
Colour and Honour Awards are to be awarded on the basis of the following specific criteria relating to each category. However, a guiding and common principle for the making of Colour and Honour awards is that COLOUR awards will be awarded for OUTSTANDING performance in that category by a student and that HONOUR awards will be awarded for EXCEPTIONAL performance in that category by a student.
Academic Achievement – Colours Awards
Years K-6
Students may be awarded Academic Colour Awards on the basis of:
– Achieving outstanding result/s in Local or State, academic competitions and/or awards; and/or
– Being placed amongst the top five to ten students in the overall academic rankings of students in individual year groups that are calculated at the end of each year.
Years 7-12
Students may be awarded Academic Colour Awards on the basis of:
– Attaining three or more ‘A’ Grades in their Semester Two Year 11 report and/or their Semester One Year 12; and/or
– Achieving outstanding result/s in local or State academic competitions and/or awards.
Academic Achievement – Honours Awards
Years K-6
Students may be awarded Academic Honour Awards on the basis of:
– Achieving exceptional result/s in State, National and/or International academic competitions and/or awards; and/or
– Being awarded Academic Colour Awards on three occasions.
Years 7-12
Students may be awarded Academic Honour Awards on the basis of:
– Upon recieving their fourth Academic Colour the student will recieve an Academic Honour;
– Receiving four or more Colours for Academic ‘A’ Grades in Year 12 subjects;
– Attaining exceptional WACE Examination results, which may include the award of a General Certificate of Distinction, and/or Course or General Exhibition, and/or Certificate of Commendation, or such other public acknowledgement that recognise exceptional performance in a WACE Examination from time to time; and/or
– Being awarded the prize of Dux of the School on the basis of their academic performance in Year 12.
Cultural Achievement – Colours Award
Students in Years K to12 may be awarded Cultural/Community Colour Awards on the basis of:
– the demonstration of an outstanding commitment and enthusiasm for their respective activity whilst also demonstrating an outstanding level of performance in their respective activity.
Cultural Achievement – Honours Award
Students in Years K to12 may be awarded Cultural/Community Honour Awards on the basis of:
– the demonstration of an exceptional commitment and enthusiasm for their respective activity whilst also demonstrating an exceptional level of performance in their respective activity.
Sporting Achievement – Colours Award
Students in Years K-12 may be awarded Sporting Colour Awards on the basis of:
– demonstrating an outstanding level of ability in a sporting activity and/or activities whilst also demonstrating values of sportsmanship and teamwork that are consistent with the School’s values.
– Achieving outstanding result/s in Local or State, sporting competitions.
Sporting Achievement – Honours Award
Students in Years K-12 may be awarded Sporting Honour Awards on the basis of:
– demonstrating an exceptional level of ability in a sporting activity and/or activities whilst also demonstrating values of sportsmanship and teamwork that are consistent with the School’s values.
– Achieving exceptional result/s in State, National and/or International sporting competitions.
Students in Years K-12 may be awarded School Service Awards on the basis of:
– demonstrating a meritorious level of service and commitment to the welfare of the School, including, but without limiting the scope of the award, the demonstration of leadership and responsibility for its students, activities and programs within and outside of the School including service to community organizations that uphold the School’s values.
At the end of Year 11, as a result of their appointment for the following year, the School’s Head Boy, Head Girl, Deputy Head Boy and Deputy Head Girl will be awarded School Service Awards.
Nomination and Selection of Reward Recipients
Before the end of each Semester, staff will be invited to submit nominations for any of the above categories.
These nominations will be submitted to the School’s Learning and Support Team and Senior Leadership group for their consideration.
The Leadership Group will consider the nominations and prior to the end of each Semester announce the recipients of the awards for that Semester. The decisions of the Leadership Team will be final. No appeals will be allowed by either staff, students and/or parents against decisions made by the Leadership Team.
Form of Awards
The Learning and Support Team shall decide upon the physical style and form of the Colour, Honour and Service Awards.
Number and Frequency of Awards
It will be possible for students, in accordance with the criteria of this policy, to be awarded Colour, Honour and/or Service Awards on more than one occasion AND for one or more activities biannuall (Semester 1 and 2).
